Fine Art Oil Portrait Paintings by Artist Douglas Lail

PORTRAIT COMMISSION
How to Get Your Portrait Painted:
Procedure and Fees
As a highly-trained portrait artist, I take great pride in creating timeless and meaningful works of art that capture the essence and character of my subjects. Whether you are looking to honor a loved one, capture the fleeting years of childhood, or commemorate a special occasion or achievement, I would be honored to work with you to create a one-of-a-kind portrait that you will cherish for years to come.
The Image for the Portrait Commission:
The process of commissioning a portrait begins with a consultation, during which we will discuss your vision for the portrait, including the subject, style, composition, and any other details. Depending on your preferences, I customarily travel to my portrait subjects to take photographic references for my portrait commissions. A sitting typically takes about one hour, depending on the scope of the painting. A custom oil painting from my images will allow for my composition and highest level of artistic style to be visible in the end product, so I do prefer to work from my own photos of my portrait subjects whenever possible. However, I am also able to create portrait paintings from photographs supplied by clients on occasions*.
After the photography session and consultation, I will utilize any sketches made and the photograph we select together to capture the subject. The final portrait will be shipped (upon approval) for locations outside of Winston, Greensboro, Charlotte, or Raleigh, NC.
Payment Schedule:
The fees for commissioning a portrait are typically based on factors such as the size and complexity of the portrait, the medium used, and my level of experience and reputation as a portrait artist. To secure a spot on my commissions list, a deposit of 50% of the total fee is required, with the remaining 50% due upon completion of the portrait. Shipping, framing, and extended travel expenses are not included in the fee. The timing of your completed portrait will be discussed upon acceptance of the commission, but typically ranges from 6-8 months. If you have a quicker timeline, please do not hesitate to reach out to me to discuss if I am able to work with it.
When you commission a portrait with me, whether I take the photographs or if I create a portrait from photos, you can rest assured that I will work closely with you to ensure satisfaction with the final product. I am committed to making any desired changes to the painting requested but limit the those requests to three rounds of revisions once the preliminary concept is approved and the painting is underway.
*As the artist, I maintain the right to select the source material to produce the best work possible. Submitted photography will be evaluated and will need to pass several quality requirements to ensure the final portrait is an accurate representation of the portrait subject.
