Hello, I'm Douglas Lail a fine art oil painting artist from Asheville, NC, currently residing in Spencer, NC. I have 10 years of experience creating expressive and soulful fine art oil portrait paintings that capture the true essence of my subjects. As a self-taught artist, I had the amazing opportunity to study under acclaimed portrait artist James Daniel in the summer of 2014.
As a lifelong artist, I have always been fascinated by the human face and the stories it can tell. My passion for portraiture began at an early age, and I have spent years refining my craft through study, practice, and collaboration with other artists.
In my work, I strive to create portraits that are both technically masterful and emotionally resonant. Whether working from life or from photographs, I approach each subject with an open heart and a deep sense of empathy, seeking to understand and capture their unique spirit and character.
My signature style blends traditional techniques with a modern sensibility, resulting in paintings that are at once classic and contemporary. I love experimenting with color, texture, and brushwork, and am always exploring new ways to push the boundaries of my art.
In addition to my work as a portrait artist, I am also a dedicated teacher and mentor, and am passionate about sharing my knowledge and expertise with others. Whether teaching workshops or working one-on-one with students, I strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters creativity, growth, and connection.
Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to use my talent to bring joy, beauty, and meaning into the world. Whether capturing the fleeting years of childhood, honoring a beloved family member, or commemorating a special occasion, I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the task of creating lasting and meaningful oil portraits and reverse drawings that will be treasured for generations to come.
I've been painting professionally since 2007. My work has been exhibited in a number of solo shows around Asheville, as well as galleries throughout the Southeast.
I paint remotely across the United States, but my home studio is here in Spencer, NC just north of Charlotte.
